We are excited to be working with our friends at Ars Nova again this Tuesday. We will be providing the talented musicians performing in their 54/10 Music Marathon with 2nd Floor Brewing’s Apricot Wheat. Come out and enjoy music from Jay Brannon, Johnny Gallagher, and others. $10 a night or $50 for the whole marathon. Cheers!
Start the weekend right - Showgasm 5/21 @ 8 pm
We are happy to be working with Ars Nova again and providing the very talented Showgasm artists with brew-ha. On tap will be a pale ale, dry-hopped with Citra hops. Citra is a new variety (2008) with a big citrus aroma and most notably used by Sierra Nevada to dry-hop their Torpedo Extra IPA. Although the artists have sole claim to this brew, I highly recommend starting your Friday night with a Showgasm. Its a quick (1 hourish show) and easy way to enjoy many local artists (7 acts & a band). And its FREE (no ticket, entrance, or cover fee). RSVP at the link below and get there early to enjoy happy half-hour! Cheers!!
The largest byproduct of brewing is of course the sweet malty wort which the yeast later fiend upon during fermentation and convert into our much beloved brew. Second to the wort is the malt from which we have extracted most of the wort’s flavor, color, and body, commonly referred to as spent grain. Living in an apartment without a yard, a majority of the spent grain ends up in a garbage bag on the curb. I always feel a little ashamed kicking it to the curb after a long fulfilling brew day. Getting out of it what I need and then adios. Ahh but this grain is not yet spent. It has so much more to give.
So a couple weeks ago I saved about 10 pounds of spent grain from a double batch brew day. I couldn’t see all that malty goodness wasted. So I brought it over to a friends house and used it to plant flowers. We mixed equal parts grain and potting mix and placed a base at the bottom of the planter boxes and pots. After placing the flower root balls, we filled in around with the spent grain mix, and then topped it off with potting mix only. I’ve heard the malty sweetness of the spent grain is a treat for birds and other critters, our reason for covering the grain mix with a layer of potting mix.
I’ve heard they are growing well. I’ll post some pics when I get some. Below is a link to Stone Brewing’s blog about planting with spent grain. If you search “spent grain” there are a number of resources out there on the interweb for getting much more out of your grain than just beer. Cheers!
Our friends at Slant Theatre Project are at it again. They need your help to make their next production happen. A spare 4 minutes is all you need. If their video gets the most views, they could win some very valuable rehearsal space. This would give them the opportunity to produce a new performance, showcasing their talent and the talent of local NYC artists, University of Evansville grads among many of them. It could also lead to chance for 2nd Floor Brewing to work with Slant Theatre again. Your support is greatly appreciated. Cheers!
Showgasm
2nd Floor Brewing is excited to be working with Ars Nova, a not-for-profit theatre dedicated to the development of new and emerging artists in NYC. Many of these talented performers are showcased monthly at Showgasm, a free and super fun evening of entertainment. We have partnered with Ars Nova to support the great work they do by providing the artists of Showgasm with a keg of our tasty brew-ha backstage. We encourage you to experience Showgasm first hand. Join us Friday, March 12th, as we pour the artists a delicious pale ale hopped with NY grown organic Cascade hops. With the creative combination of 2nd Floor Brewing and Ars Nova, there’s no limit to how exciting the evening could be. Can’t make it this Friday? Check out www.showgasm.com for future Showgasm performances - We’ll be fueling the artists with 2nd Floor brews for many shows to come. Oh yeah, and did you catch that admission is free? See ya there!
This is where it started. On the 2nd floor of our Williamsburg apartment in May 2007, we brewed our first beer on the kitchen stove with fresh malt, hops, yeast, and NYC tap water. We have since grown more and more passionate about locally crafted, full-flavored beers. We see that same passion in the local farmers, bakers, chefs, and artists we encounter daily and whose craft we enjoy on a regular basis. It's the attention paid by those who create what we drink, eat, buy, hear, and view that fuels the 2nd Floor fires. The intention of 2nd Floor Brewing is to share our love of crafting great beers while supporting like minded artisans whom share their unique gifts with us. 2nd Floor Brewing was named simply so that with each batch brewed, we call to mind the origin from which we started pursuing our craft. With each beer savored, we are reminded that ours is a labor of love. May yours be too. Cheers, Maggie & Brad
